Shares in another company

As part of a business deal our company has been given a number of shares in
another company at no cost. How can I record these shares as an asset? It
seems whichever way I try to do it it either looks as though we owe them
money for the shares or it does not recognise that they are worth anything
because we did not pay for them in the first place.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I guess they would have a value based on the business deal you entered into.
eg If you sold 50k of goods for which payment/settlement was by way of
shares then the shares would appear to have a nominal value of 50k
