Should I go with the maintenance Contract?

B

Brent Hauver

Hey I am wondering if I should get the maintenance contract for this year?
There has been no releases and no support-

I asked the sales people what I would be getting and they said that I would
get access to the info knowledgebase.... Which is not worth 270+ bucks.

Do you think that there will be any significant updates this year and what
do you think they will be?

Stuff like "Euro dollar conversion" is not worth the money.. etc

Is there any RIO for the money that I would pay for a maintenance contract?
I pay enough taxes etc to a big organizations for blue sky, I can't afford
to do this..

If 2.0 is coming out this year, then I would probably save the money and use
it for the Upgrade...

What do you all think?

I actually found it kind of bland for a "confidential" document. That type
of information is made non-confidential for other Microsoft products on the
Microsoft web sites. It just goes to show some useful information as to the
future exists, but nobody seems to want to share it with their clients.

Everybody should check that link out.

OK- My contract is up now and I need to re-up. If I purchase now, Will I
get in on the new Maint program (support A)?

If so I am going to sign up...

According to the document, you will still be on Standard A unless you re-new
after Nov 1st, but it looks to me like they are both the same thing, just a
different same.

Jeff

root,

Make sure to remind me when I tell you something in confidentiality.

Its M$' decision when to make things public, not yours!

Vince

Well,
Now that it is public, can someone let me know how the pricing will work if
I bought the license for upto 3 lanes, but only use 2 and I want to re-new
the Maintenence and support package? Will I be charged on 2 or 3 lanes?
Thank You,
Vince

You don't make friends with your kids and tell them your secrets do you?
Your not one of those are you?
LOL

Jeff,

Nobody told me anything in confidentiality. That document is in a PUBLIC
location. I am not a member of that site and I did not penetrate a secure
area. The information on that site reflects retail pricing and nothing that
you can't readily find out about other Microsoft products from the Microsoft
public web sites.

The real problem is that you have to work to find out that information when
it should be readily available to all of their customers.

If you are so concerned with a big security leak, maybe you should take your
beef up with the host of the document, not me.

I don't have kids. It is however too bad people are acting childish over
this issue.

Jeff, Root:
....both of you guys are great people, and all I would say regarding this
matter, is that it's done...let's all just be friends. Also I would like to
know how the pricing will work if I bought the license for upto 3 lanes, but
only use 2 and I want to re new the Maintenence / support package? Will I be
charged on 2 or 3 lanes?
Thank You,
Vince

Hi Vince :) I agree we should all be friends!!!

We should know who we are... and what role we are attempting to play... in
this board....

You may find some posters... posts some times... strange comments...
especially certain partners...

Personally I find the Microsoft overall has done an awesome job in
delivering a software solution to small retailers... based on what I read in
hear...
and my experience using the SO software for over 1 year as an end user and
as an MBS certified partner.

However when it comes to communicating certain information to partners...
new... and old...
well it is not always well done.

The information on Scan Source was supposed to be private for now... I
assume...
Anyhow... this is the public area... anybody can say what they want...

Regarding your question... your reseller might have a hard time answering
your question...
But tomorrow there is a meeting... but if you read the document that is
creating some...
commotion... you would know already ;-)

Vince you keep up the awesome work... can you help us... help some more
business similar to yours?

Vince,

That's the problem. The plan is confidential because there are/will be
changes to it, just like the Sept 1 dropping the service plan requirement
changed between the time it was originally written and now.

If you really read the document, there is no mention of existing customers
and there has been no communication about them yet. This document is _only_
about new customers!

Whatever changes are made, yes, you should re-up for the Support
A/Maintenance Plan. If you read carefully, there is a penalty for not
re-upping on time and if you decide to drop it, you cannot increase the
number of registers or receive any updates/hotfixes without the plan.

As for the rest of the questions, the answer is that we just don't know yet.
M$ has kinda dropped the document on us and we haven't seen all of their
answers yet.

J

Jeff

Brent,

Actually there has been 1 service pack (released 9/16/2003) and 14 hotfixes
since 1.2 was released.

It had been publicly announced that another .x release (will probably be
called 1.5) will be later this year and the 2.0 will be released sometime
next year. Even before root's link!

Sure you can drop support, just don't complain when its costs you more
later! There is a penalty for lateness.

Jeff

When I said "this year" that means M$' Fiscal Year which runs July 2004-
June 2005.

Marc,
I can try to keep up the good work :) I don't know how the info was
supposed to be, all I know is everyone would know about it sooner or later,
and since we are all pretty good friends (I assume) on this messgae board,
nobody will in my oppinion mis-use any info...if it was supposed to be
private or not, what's done is done and there is no point in getting angry,
because it's not going to solve anything. I know Jeff because he wrote me a
killer report to print out the daily sales I was having an issue with, and
root has answered at least 100 posts of mine...not litteraly :) Marc, I did
end up speaking with someone over at Microsoft, and the latest news is that I
have to pay for 3 even though I only use 2 registers, because the plan I
bought at the time was for upto 3, and there is no way for them to monitor
how many I use. Not a big deal I guess, it will end up costing me roughly
125 more a year, but I guess there is nothing to be done about that. Take
care my man, and I hope that all is going good for you.
