Are you using Mac or Windows? There's a plethora of affordable small
business software for Windows where there's only a few for Mac. I intensely
dislike Intuit as a company but Quickbooks Pro is a good program that's easy
to learn & does what needs doing in a user friendly manner. If you have
production costs associated with your business, parts that you assemble to
make a whole product, then look to something with complex inventory
management. Quickbooks Premier Manufacturing & Wholesale does this as does
MYOB. I've tried MYOB, used Peachtree briefly many years ago, and have been
a Quickbooks Pro user for years. I prefer Quickbooks, found MYOB painful to
navigate after using Quickbooks and really can't give an experienced opinion
on Peachtree since I downloaded it but it won't import my Quickbooks data.
Peachtree, from browsing the demo, looks to be similar to MYOB. Either way,
all three are basically in the same price range, do the same things, and are
geared towards the small business with owner, employee or bookkeeper doing
the books. There are other packages out there as well, Simply Accounting is
one that comes to mind but I have no experience with it.

If you're using Mac, Quickbooks makes a Mac version but its terrible. MYOB
also makes a Mac version (and this is the version I actually tried & found
painful to navigate) and would be the better choice of the two for that OS.
To my knowledge Peachtree doesn't make a Mac version. Pay attention to
subscription costs for things such as payroll and tech support. Both are
optional but one of the complaints of some users is that you have to pay a
yearly fee for these things. Quickbooks requires you to upgrade to their
latest version now in order to maintain tax table updates and has stopped
supporting versions more than 2-3 years old. I think reading the company
policy on such things is just as important as the product's features & cost.

Help

A consultant would need a great deal more business information than you
provided, including your country of origin. Please provide so they can
give you the information you seek.

Else you might check the 2 off the shelf easily purchased in the US
office supply stores. www.quickbooks.com & www.peachtree.com

Staples has a great deal on Peachtree 2004. You purchase Peachtree
Accounting 2004 & get a rebate for $160. It equals free. Check staples
dot com and go to the rebate center to find the offer. It expires the
22nd of May so hurry.

Peter,

If you are starting a company in the US, you may want to go to
http://www.a-systems.net/html/vb.htm and check out Visual Bookkeeper.
You can get started for $25. The $25 package comes with general ledger,
payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, sales order entry and a
built in contact manager. By the way you can update payroll tax tables
for free by going to their website,
http://www.a-systems.net/html/tb512.htm. You don't have to purchase tax
tables as with QuickBooks.

The difference between Visual Bookkeeper and QuickBooks or PeachTree is
that when you grow, and that is probably your goal, you can simply
upgrade to the next version of Visual Bookkeeper or add additional
modules you might need. A-Systems will send you a free trial copy of
Visual Bookkeeper by requesting it from this page
http://www.a-systems.net/html/freetrialvb.htm . You can actually set
your company up and run the software before you buy it.

By the way, A-Systems has been a successful accounting software company
for 26 years. You have probably never heard of A-Systems because they
generally sell by referral and don't advertise. Perhaps that's why
their software is so affordable.
