Startup limited company, single employee, consultancy - desperately need advice on accounts and pay

I need some advice on what software to purchase for my accounts and
payroll. I don't want to use paper or spreadsheets! I am considering
Sage and Quickbooks. If anyone can guide me or profer advice, I'd
appreciate it.

I am starting out with a new limited company, with myself as director/sole
employee. My wife is also a director but is unlikely at present to be
employed. I currently use Act! 6 for contact management. I am looking
for an accounts and payroll package. My business is Internet business
consultancy. I will provide consultancy to SMEs on how to use the
Internet with their businesses. I am purchasing a franchise, from which I
will purchase branded advertising and other material, web hosting, bespoke
software development, CD-ROM business cards and other services. I will
mark up CD-ROMS and services and sell on to my customers. I will charge
my own time as a consultant. I will be VAT registered.

Thanks

I was in the same position 4-5 months ago, speak to your accountant.

I could not decide between Sage or QB, my accountant uses sage, so I
decided to go for Sage, makes life a lot easier if you accountant is
familiar with your accounts software.

From not having any accounts experience I seem to have picked up Sage quite
easily, I would also recommend getting Sage cover just for additional
backup.

For payroll, I would speak to your accountant, they do my payroll. One less
thing I have to worry about.

Thanks Peter. Please excuse my naivety but I don't have an accountant yet.
I was wondering how much a good accounts/payroll package would limit (or
even eliminate) the need for one. I'm having a look at MYOB Accounting
too. At least I can get an evaluation version to try.

I changed accountants earlier this year and the fact that the firm I
moved to are familiar with QB was the decider: instead of me handing
over a stack of printouts I gave them the basic P&L and BS and the
accounts file on CD for them to check out whatever they wanted

I can't answer the question about the payroll packages but I would imagine
the cost of an accountant doing your payroll would probably be less than
the annual cost of the payroll software.

I would not advise trying to get away with not using an accountant, their
advice and help can quite easily out way the cost.

I would get in touch with a few local accountants and try to arrange a 1st
cconsultation, most should not charge you for this and it will give you
some idea of how they can help you.

FYI we run a single person payroll in about 4 mins per week which currently
equate to a billing of £4.00. Regarding an accounting package, we recommend
our clients use Maney Manager from www.moneysoft.co.uk. We then can receive
their files electronically = makes things a lot quicker...
