USA Step up in basis

Question. Wife has stock and has large unrealized LTCG. Husband has illness, life threatening. Can wife give stock to husband and get step up in basis upon inheritance? I believe husband most hold onto stock for one year. Taxpayers are US.

I would think if a joint return then this is not allowed.
