Hi
I have a Category which I tried to 'Move' to another Category and I would
like to make it a subcategory of that category. ie. the category I want to
move is Car - Summer Check and I want to make it a subcategory of 'Car'.
The thing is when I moved it, it vanished and when I went to my Budget, the
entry was there but the text was not.
Please could someone assist me.
Thanks alot in advance.
Having addressed the ability restore your file to before the change,
and based on your observations, I tried the Move on a test file. I
find that things look nicer if I use the dual category mode. That
way you get separate boxes for category and subcategory.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889931/en-uk tells how to make the
switch if you use Money 2005.
If you use a single category list, then enter your new subcategory
as Car:SummerCheck. That is to say, use the ':' character.
Sorry about the sense of urgency on the backup file thing, but I
felt that a few minutes might make the difference. You could
probably still recover otherwise, but then you would have had to
work out how to do that.
Here is my suggested backup strategy for Money 2005:
In Tools->Settings->BackupOptions
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...
Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.
I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to
backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big
floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see
Glyn Simpson's method at
http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx
* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money061111.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box.
