Hi

I have a Category which I tried to 'Move' to another Category and I would
like to make it a subcategory of that category. ie. the category I want to
move is Car - Summer Check and I want to make it a subcategory of 'Car'.
The thing is when I moved it, it vanished and when I went to my Budget, the
entry was there but the text was not.

Please could someone assist me.
Thanks alot in advance.

First, don't overwrite your good backup.

As to the technique of not overwriting your good backup, if you have
Money to automatically back up upon exit, don't exit right now.

There is more than one way to proceed:

1. Go to where your backup is, and make a copy to a new name.
2. Change the settings in Money to not back up without asking.
3. Just do File->Restore to undo what you have done since backup. If
in doubt, you can choose to restore to a filename other than the
default.

Having addressed the ability restore your file to before the change,
and based on your observations, I tried the Move on a test file. I
find that things look nicer if I use the dual category mode. That
way you get separate boxes for category and subcategory.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889931/en-uk tells how to make the
switch if you use Money 2005.

If you use a single category list, then enter your new subcategory
as Car:SummerCheck. That is to say, use the ':' character.

Sorry about the sense of urgency on the backup file thing, but I
felt that a few minutes might make the difference. You could
probably still recover otherwise, but then you would have had to
work out how to do that.

Here is my suggested backup strategy for Money 2005:

In Tools->Settings->BackupOptions
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.

I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to
backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big
floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see
Glyn Simpson's method at http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx

* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money061111.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box.

Thanks very much for the backup information and suggestions which I will
duly note.

Luckily I was able to restore the backup so I am ok.

Regarding the link to MS, it states the update is for "When you enter a
transaction in Microsoft Money 2005, you cannot select Category and Sub
Category in separate lists.' The problem I have if I tried to 'Move' a
category, I can select the category eg. Car from the drop menu, but when I
click 'Ok', the category does not appear under 'Car'. It just disappears.
Is this what you got? Do you still recommend me installing this as I am
using Version 2004.

I just tried to modify to Car:SummerCheck and the ":" is not accepted.

No. It would not help or hurt. Instead, in Money 2004, I recommend
Tools->Options->Categories and un-tick
UseASingleListForCategoriesAndSubcategories....

I expect the above setting gets you two separate boxes to work with.

I don't know how the effect is going to be on the budget. Let's hope
it is as you wish.

Thanks for your assistance.

I was wondering if you were able to assist/answer my other unanswered
questions posted on this newsgroup... I hope that you can, if possible.

Kind regards

I am unable to find "Tools->Options->Categories and un-tick
UseASingleListFoCategoriesAndSubcategories...." as mentioned. There is
Tools>Settings.... but that it is. Please can you let me know where I
should check?
Thank you
