What do I need to do to read this group in either my News Reader in
Windows Live Mail or as an rss feed?

Right now I cannot get either method to work for me. I briefly had the rss
feed working but then it stopped for days. I finally deleted it and have
been trying to add it again but I keep getting a message that it is "not a
valid feed."

A few years ago I participated in this news group with a membership to
many news groups through my ISP. My current ISP does not have a news group
offering. I miss this news group. I understand that I can read it Online
on the Web now but I prefer being able to check the topics offline and
mark some as watched, etc.

I also cannot seem to use the contact form, although I do have Java
running. I am using Mozilla Firefox most of the time, but I did try
Internet Explorer with this site, too. Still didn't work.

If I am posting using athenanews.com, I am unaware of how. I am using my
Rockryno.com membership. Secondly, I can use RSS feeds with one of the
other groups on this site, but not this one. I do not understand.

Looks like you figured how to get here. You are posting using
athenanews.com. According to this page

this
newsgroup.
This page will get you started in setting up an account in WLM:

Are you using Windows live mail or your browser to post these messages?

I would look at my second link and setup Windows Live mail with the

For rss, I have tried

alt.comp.software.financial.quicken
http://alt.comp.software.financial.quicken.htm

And some other variations on these themes. Each time I receive a message
about "...is not a valid rss feed."

And that is a correct response. This is a newsgroup. Newsgroups do not do
RSS feeds.

Your choices are to stick with the browser method or configure a newsreader
software (outlook express/windows mail, Thunderbird, Forte Agent, to name a
few) to access the newsgroup on the athenanews.com server.

Actually you can get an RSS feed into Windows Mail (and probably other
software) out of Google Groups. I did it and I didn't like it. The
main issues I had is that I needed to log into Google Groups if I wanted
to post a reply and I prefer to not have my Google Account listed, nor
did I want a throw away account plus not enough of the message was
displayed. I did take me to Google Groups automatically if I wanted to
see more of the message or post a response.

There is an add-in for Outlook 2007 where I get Newsgroup feeds into
Outlook - much like Windows Mail. The license is $24. I am using it on
a trial basis for 30 days. I like it so far as it means that I don't
have to jump to a separate application. More information can be found
here: www.mapilab.com/outlook

My personal belief is if you are going to get involved with newsgroups then
the only way to read and reply to them is by using a newsreader software. It
does require having access to a newsgroup server but there are free and low
cost newservers available. Webnews like google groups just does not cut it
for me. ymmv

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions and issues. I
truly appreciate your help and the help of the other person who responded.

If newsgroups do not do RSS Feeds, then why was I able to add one of the
other newsgroups on this site (Rockryno.com)as an RSS Feed. Also why do I
see the RSS Feed symbol prominently displayed next to the Group listing
for all the group here and also near this one in "My Groups."

I guess I do not understand the difference between this Rockryno.com site
and athenanews.com. I thought when I signed up for Rockryno.com I would
be signing up for access to the server through my newsreader in Windows
Live Mail. I have other free newsgroup accounts available there. I do have
have a Google account and I am signed up for this newsgroup there, but I
cannot figure out how to get that to show up in Windows Live Mail either.
Some how I'm missing some key piece of information, and I've tried to find
an answer with Google help but cannot seem to find it.

The last time I checked the Contact form displayed errors as well.

Normally newsgroups are carried by news servers. It has only been within the
past few years that accessing newsgroups via web pages has become popular.
Google Groups (formerly known as DejaNews) started it years ago. RSS feeds
into windows mail is trying to replicate using a news server. One drawback
with RSS feeds is that they are read only. If you want to post you have to
go back to google groups or through a real news server. Some how
Rockryno.com is accessing the athena news server when you post. (I can tell
from your headers).

If you would like to access this news group through windows mail then you
need to configure WLM to access the athena news server directly. Go to this
page that I posted the other day: http://athenanews.com/members/. You will
need a userid and password from athena to complete the setup.

Merrily,

Newsgroups are part of Usenet, and are hosted on various
servers that propagate postings among themselves. Various sites
may provide access to these newsgroups through their own
front-end web based portals, but these are of their own design,
and not part of the Usenet newsgroup structure. Newsreaders
access a news server directly to download desired headers and
content from groups of interest hosted on their provider's
servers.

Hi, Merrily.

And, to add to what Laura and Leonard said...

Outlook Express has been bundled into every copy of Windows for at least a
decade; Windows Mail is the updated version in every copy of Vista. (OE
won't run on Vista; WM won't run on anything else.) Most of us who have
tried the newer Windows Live Mail like it better than either OE or WM - and
it will run on both WinXP and Vista. In fact, we can run WLM side-by-side
with OE or WM, although I don't see why anyone would after a brief
transition period.

OE/WM/WLM all include a newsreader, which I much prefer to the web-based
(browser) interface for reading newsgroups.

In addition to the thousands of free news servers that offer more than
100,000 newsgroups (last time I checked was years ago), Microsoft hosts over
2,000 NGs for peer-to-peer support of MS products on its public news server
(msnews.microsoft.com), which is free and does not require you to log on.
Many of the other news servers (also known by several other names, such as
Forums or Discussion Groups) "slurp" messages from the host servers and
relay them - and any responses - to and from their own subscribers (often
without disclosing their Microsoft source).

WLM includes access to RSS feeds, but I've not yet learned much about blogs
and RSS feeds so I don't know how those relate to newsgroups.

And your chance of your question being seen is much reduced if you post
from Google Groups as more and more people are getting fed up with
Google's support of spam and are joining the Usenet Improvement
Project. See link in signature.
