UK Supplier asking for VAT to be shown?

I am not VAT-registered (sole trader) but someone I am going to pay to do some work for me is, and he has asked me to reflect this in our letter of engagement because his accountant requires it. Surely if he wants to reclaim the vat, wouldn't he need to invoice me, showing the vat element?
