The American dream

Thought this might be interesting and germane, something to define and
plan or set goals for: the American dream. There are two views posted
below, to satisfy the politically minded, and many other articles
available from each of these two sources.

The BLS tables of consumer expenditures include income data. The upper
three quintiles mostly have more income than expenses (average). Not
to be too cynical, but it might seem that to some these days, just
being solvent is an achievement. Several (most) articles define the
original "American dream," but note the variability of definitions
from individual to individual.

I liked the above article in particular. It is my kind of religion,
though with some good practical suggestions, too. It is one of the
best 'applied philosophy' works I have read in awhile.

Elle, I liked the statistics in the other one, but values are very
important, including "saving" as opposed to "consuming." The title to
the article linked below is

43% have less than 10k for retirement

http://money.cnn.com/2010/03/09/pf/retirement_confidence/index.htm

Paraphrasing from it: Apparently 60% of retirement costs will be
covered by pensions and social security, but the solution many are
opting for is extending their work years. Not a great article, but
some hopefully straight data.
