Transactions mysteriously moved into wrong accounts and the dates changed

At some point in the past month, possibly when a QuickBooks update
occurred, we suddenly had a $3K discrepancy on one of our credit card
accounts. Looking back through it we found that about 100 transactions
that quite obviously belonged in other accounts had been moved to this
other account. Not only that but the year has been changed to 2001 on
all of these transactions. We didn't start business until 2003.

Although we know that these transaction certainly shouldn't be in this
account, we can't figure out what accounts they should be in or even
what the correct years are. They seem to be a mishmash of transactions
pulled from several different years which is throwing off all our
accounting reports.

Any idea what could have caused this and any way to fix it?

Have you checked the dates on your computer workstations? A bad date can
cause any number of 'memorized' transactions to be entered into the company
file, if the original user doesn't notice it and clicks 'ok' to input
memorized transactions. It might also mess with the downloads from your
financial institutions. There is also the possibility that someone was
editing account names, and merged transactions from other credit cards.

As to fixing it, I would suggest restoring your file from backup.
