Underpayment penalty refunded

Turbotax calculated that I had a $5 underpayment of
estimated taxes on California form 5805. I filed
electronically and had the tax I owed direct debited from my
bank account including the $5 penalty. The state sent me
back a $5 refund check with no explanation at all. Should I
cash this check or return it or simply ignore it?

Exact same thing happened to me a year ago. I owed California
$2 in underpayment penalty, and when I paid it they sent me
back a $2 check.

No idea what's up with that.

Same here. Had a client with S/W computed 2004 CA $3
underpayment penalty. He paper filed and paid it to CA.
They sent the $3 back. No idea why.

I'd say, cash it. They can let you know if they change
their mind. ;-)

Maybe we should stop paying any penalty.
