Virus Emails

Matt

Ever since I got my MS Net Passport and started listing my
email address here, I've received about 20 emails of that
new virus that looks like it's coming from Miscrosoft
Security or other official MS senders with a security
update attachment. (This is a worm - do not download it.)
Just wondering if anyone else is getting them and if
they're coming from Net Passport or from this site.

msnews.microsoft.com, along with several other news servers, is listed in
the Swen.A .dat file.

As long as there are infected computers with internet access (there could be
hundreds of these worldwide), anyone that posts to a news server targeted by
Swen.A with a real email address will get bombarded with this crap.

MS has shortened the message expiration window to 30 days. This has allowed
everyone that munged their email address back in late August / early
September when Swen.A broke out to finally be free of this barrage of crap.

Thanks for the replies. As much as it sucks, I'm glad to
know I'm not the only one....at least I'm not going crazy
and I'm not suffering alone!

around not entering your email address?
Some news servers require a real email address, whether to log on, or simply
as part of their Terms of Service.

However, with most news servers, you can put whatever you want. This needs
to be done in your newsreader, both for account and signature settings.

Outlook Express will complain that a "munged" address appears invalid during
account setup, but it can still be used.

Due to spam, trolling, cyber-stalkers, etc, this has been common practice
for many users for years.

However, as this is a peer-to-peer support forum, and net-abuse is uncommon
here, many users used their real email addresses. Swen.A has changed that
for nearly everyone, though.

Hi Jennifer

Looks like Scott did an excellent job of answering your question. I use a
hotmail address that I never use and only occasionally check to make sure I
keep it open. That is the e-mail address I list.

Bob
