What's the best way to enter Bulk items (assortments)

I buy items that come as assortments. Right now I enter the assortment as a non-inventory item for POs & receive the individual pieces of the assortment as inventory items when they arrive. It works somewhat, but does anyone have any better ideas. I'm surprised that it's not an easy-to-find answer since it's just the opposite of selling kits.
