work experience

Hello people, I am an AS student with a view of a career in Accountancy and
was wondering if anyone knows any companies that offer work experience
places for a week or two in the school holidays? I live in the East
Midlands region.

Thank you

Dunno about work experience in the East Midlands but I've seen lots of
kids come into Accounting Practice down here in the South for a couple
of weeks and it can be quite a trial for both the student and the
employer.

The world is divided into two distinct groups:

Group A
Instincively understand double-entry and and the importance of attention
to detail and ask all the right questions. They slot into an accountancy
office from Minute 1.

Group B
Will produce nothing of value at all during their two weeks and will
leave behind a trail of error and destruction.

It would be wise to figure out which of those two groups you belong to!

Try this website for a flavour:

....and read a few threads here re VAT and Tax to get a feel for how you
feel about it. It can be *very* rewarding to save your client thousands
of pounds because you know your way around the rules, but learning
those rules (which change all the time) is very hard work.

Work experience is a bad idea in my view. My son was interested in
joining the police. During his work experience with them apart from a
night with Traffic doing 120 mph down the Kings Road in a BMW he was
left to fend for himself from long periods and it turned him off the
Police Force for good!

The other great way of getting a flavour for accountancy is to have a go
at answering questions here. In the outside world it is very important
to get business decisions right, to know your limitations, *never* to
exceed them. But this is Usenet and it doesn't matter a toss if you are
hopelessly wrong!

Someone will put you right, DopeyDoh will have an excuse for another
inane comment, and you'll be able to get a feel for the subject before
you commit your life to it!
