The Social Security tax is NOT a "flat tax". While the Social
Security tax rate is flat, it is only assessed on wages, salaries and
net earnings from self employment. And, except for the Medicare
portion of the Social Security tax, there is a maximum cutoff point
after which no tax is collected.

It is my belief that if you're going to have a real discussion on a
"flat tax", you must take into consideration Social Security taxes.

It is my personal opinion that the Social Security tax is nothing more
than an additional income tax which only the American working class
pays.
It may be your opinion, but it is not based on fact. Anyone who earns their
income via wages, salary, commission, fees, retainers etc., no matter how
much pay the same rate up to a maximum amount.

And the lower the income the greater the return at retirement on the amount
of SS tax paid.

And if you had not noticed, SS tax is a flat tax.

DUH! A flat tax is a tax where the same rate applies to everything to which
the tax applies. There is a single rate that all applies to all earned
income up to a maximum.

That is, by definition, a flat tax.

If we had a "flat tax" for income like we do for social security, you
would pay no income tax on your income that exceeds $97,500. BUT, you
would pay income tax on EVERY PENNY up to that $97,500. Try selling
that to the American public at large.

The employer intends to exploit you. That is the fundamental nature of the
relationship. You would be as much a "partner" as the negro slave was a
partner to the paternalistic plantation owner. When you get that invite to
the Country Club, it won't be as an employee.

Obviously you undervalue yourself.

Within broad limits, smarts makes NO difference in the overwhelming majority
of jobs. In those few where it does, you're better off as an independant
contractor.

Well, fine, if you're too smart for the job, then get another job.Whew!

Your personal opinion is incorrect. But folks of modest incomes do
pay a higher percentage of their overall income than do folks in the
high income brackets.

While I'm pretty sure that self employment is subject to fica I'm more
concerned with this definition of "flat tax". It seems all taxes are
flat since "the same rate applies to everything to with the tax
applies."
I'm glad it all in the definition.

Some might say that the current income tax isn't a flat tax because
different rates apply to income depending upon how much one makes but
I've seen the light because fica is defined as a flat tax that only
applies
to some income. A graduated income tax is really a series of flat
taxes
where a specific tax applies to a specific segment of one's income.

Making the good republicans ecstatic. Of course, they then happily take
the SS money of the poor to provide tax cuts for the wealthy. Like god
intended.

It is no wonder so many making more than 97,500 a year want
a flat tax.

If social security tax is recognized to be a flat tax. I
would think that selling the flat tax would be a cinch if we
just raised the minimum wage to 97,500 a year, don't you?

When John L. Lewis was head of the United Mine Workers, he was asked...after
sending his members out on strike...what the union wanted. His one word
answer was, "More!"

Not one word about his members raising their productivity passed his lips.
As far as he was concerned, his members had to do nothing to jusity their
increase in wages and benefits. All of the giving had to fall on the owner's
who of course passed all of their increased costs on to general public.

That's what loony left losers libs never realize. All the expense of a
corporation is eventually paid by the customers of the corporation, and if
the union contract is industry wide, then the public is denied a choice.

That's one reason American cars cost so damned much; it's irrational to pay
the ridiculous wages and benefits we do for someone to turn the third nut
from the left. Hence, the high cost of American cars and the rise of
Japanese cars.

Actually, they find it almost impossible to take advantage of me -
particularly since I'm self-employed and work off-site on a contract or
