The software I use (gnucash) is treating all of the equity:eek:pening balances I have and adding them up as equity. So on the b/s under equity it shows not the difference between A and L, but simply totals up all my opening balances. I had thought that equity is simply the difference between A and L. If one opens an asset account, say a savings account, with $500 in it, you increase the asset:savings, and increase equity:eek:pening balances?

The question isn't whether A-L=E, the question here is who gave the company $500 and why? Or, did someone simply pull money out of a general account and go open a savings account?
