Has anyone here ever tried scanning their receipts and using a website or character recognition program to identify lines such as the items, dates, HST/taxes, store name, etc.?

I've tried two sites and offer this service and they were both unsuccessful in the 5-10 sample receipts I sent them. Both of these sites received all kinds of praise but I wonder if anyone actually uses them AND saves time doing so.

The places I tried were Neat and Shoeboxed. I sent receipts both scanned with a high quality gray scale image and phone camera pictures. Neither made much of a difference.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! I have 1000s of receipts to do and I'd really like a better way.

I'm a small business owner by the way. Not an accountant.

If you use Adobe Acrobat Pro X or versions 8+ on any scanned image, the OCR will pick it up fairly nicely and very quickly
