I recently registered for VAT and would like to re-claim the VAT on all my previous purchases (from the past 4 years) and also 6 months of services. I'm due to do my first VAT return shortly, and would like to know if I need to claim back on every purchase, or if I can leave out some as I choose? Also, I assume the date from which 6 months previous to applies is the date of registration rather than the date I submit the return, is that correct?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

You can't claim back the VAT on all previous purchases, only the VAT on goods which you still hold, or goods which were used to make other goods which you still hold. Check out HMRC's brief guidance here: https://www.gov.uk/vat-registration/purchases-made-before-registration

And yes, the date from which you calculated the 4 years / 6 months is the date of registration.
