USA Calculating Earnings per Share

Imagine that a public company is preparing its 10Q. It wants to report the earnings per share. To do this, you divide the earnings by the number of shares outstanding. For the shares outstanding, do you use the average value for the quarter or do you use the value at the end of the quarter?
