USA Commission Advances

Our sales rep asked for an advance on his commission. This is not something we normally do with our sales team. We ran the advance through payroll to tax the $2K upfront. We are now tracking his commission and deducting commission earned from the $2k to pay us back for his advance. Is this how other's are handling this situation?
