Hi guys. Is there a maximum monthly amount (e.g. $400 - $500 per month) that can be paid to per diem employees (or any ANY employment classification) that will avoid a company from entering the realm of having to pay additional benefits like SSI, MC, etc? I have heard that $400 or $500 is a figure that a company may use to avoid additional costs?

No, there is no "safe harbor" amount. You have a 1099 worker if they self direct their work. (Think contractor who adds on to your house.) You have an employee if you have to direct and manage their work. It is more complex than that but that's a start.
