USA Nonprofit Organization Payments to a Business

Worked for a nonprofit that raises funds for kids academics and athletics. They were writing checks directly to the sports organization. Now sports organization says they can’t accept any longer and checks must come directly from individual-me (so I now need to be paid by nonprofit and 1099’d). Is there a reason why a business could not accept a payment from our nonprofit any longer?
