Hi there,
We are raising funds for a US charity over in the UK with some golf and cycle events. We have opened a community account with our bank for the money to go into and be sent over to the US when the events are finished. However, l need to invoice some companies for the golf packages etc.. and have been told l need to invoice from my actual business (as an agent) and then l can send the money directly to the community account. The problem is one accountant has told me l don't have to charge VAT as its a zero VAT rate as the US charity has a 5019(c)(3) and we are issuing it on behalf of them but another accountant has told us that we have to charge VAT as this can be seen as fraudulent?????? We are just trying to not waste 20% of the charities money. Can anyone help?

Hi,
Fundraising events by a charity are treated as exempt for VAT purposes. See VATA 1994, sch 9 Group 12.
You must have a prove that the funds are going to a charity.
