UK Contracting whilst employed - Self Assessment vs Umbrella

Hi all,

I am currently fully employed on PAYE but I am looking to do some contracting work for a US company.
The duration of the contract I am not sure of yet but which would be the best option to take?

If I take HMRC compliant umbrella company, do I run the risk of HMRC add the tax code of BR to my full time employment instead of the second job?
Self assessment would mean employer would have no idea at all but could it also incur any potential mess ups from HMRC?

Would I also need to consider IR35?
