You CAN file as US nonresident on a 1040NR for the whole year. OR you can file as a "dual status alien". You can't file a normal 1040. However, what you do in the US affects what you do in the UK. In the UK, you are a split year taxpayer and may owe as you will lose your personal allowance. Your split year date is Nov 14 if you file as a Dual Status Alien but it is 1 Jan 2017 if you go 1040NR. Going 1040NR would result in your US income being taxed in the US AND in the UK (less the US tax paid). Not goo. Ideally, the way to go will therefore be US dual status alien, UK split year ending Nov 14 2016.
