Customer accounts missing

I enter a new customer - save and close.

I go to 'find' the customer by either name or customer # but it does not show or seem to exist.

The number is missing from the customer ID column on the customer list

I try to re-enter the exact customer info (and number) and this message pops up:

####: The ID or item number is already being used. Please type another number

It seems to register that the number was assigned - but there is no way to access the customer info. This is becoming more regular and I am loosing the contact info and records that some individuals exist.

Please help!

- what is going on?

- where are the files?

- how can I have access to them?

- how can I get them to show in the customer list?

I am using Microsoft Accounting Professional 2009 - which has discontinued support... and I could not seem to find a discussion group on Accounting 2009 - it sent me to Access discussion groups where someone recommeneded this site.

When I go to upgrade in the future - I won't have all the files to transfer
