Hi all,
I am a 19 year old AAT student studying my AAT Level 3 at the moment. I funded it all myself and intend to do so until Level 4. But I am looking to move from my current position to a role that will support my studies better.
I am currently working as a Purchase Ledger Clerk in a waste management company. I have discussed with them about using the skills that I have learnt so far, basic double entry, reconciliations, accruals etc in my role. They have advised me that they do not require these from me and will not for the foreseeable future. I am not really involved in the accounts much to be honest. The most I will touch any software like Sage would be to pull a remittance off to send to a supplier. We mostly use specialised software and any jobs relating to ledger work or accounts are left to managers or the financial controller.
To be blunt, I am a bit disappointed and feel as if not apply the practical skills I am learning is some capacity is holding me back academically as I am much more of a practical learner. I live at home and have discussed what I should do with my mum, who has worked in both practise and industry as an accountant and she has suggested looking for another job in practise due to the reasons above, as well as general dissatisfaction with work for other reasons not related to this.
Where we are based is fairly rural Yorkshire, but I do have good access to both York and Hull. However, many of the jobs listed are a bit out of my scope at the moment. Mostly Semi-Senior or Senior Accountant positions. Is there any tips, designated places to look for jobs, or any advice on what I can do in order to pivot myself into a better role more relevant to my education?
I would preferably like to go into practise but I am just as happy to go into industry, or any position really that would allow me to develop my accounting skills along side my qualifications.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
