Hello:

I was just notified by the IRS of an audit for my 08 tax return. There are three areas they will be looking at, one which is business related travel expenses.

I am an insurance adjuster, and worked hurricane claims out of State for almost five months. On my schedule C, I wrote off the daily per diem for food and lodging for that period of time. It was somewhere around $175 per day.

Should I be required to show where I stayed each night, or can I obtain a letter from the company I worked for (on a contract basis) showing that I was handling claims in that area for the period in question?

Another question I have is this: I stayed with a relative for a portion of the time. Should I still be able to claim the daily per diem for working out of State, even though I was staying with relatives?

Thank you very much in advance for any imput.
