Hello,

I am wondering if anyone would happen to know of a good accounting training program that focuses on the basics (debits/credits). I have recently graduated from college, and I am working at a public accounting firm. I have found that my college training was not sufficient, and that some of my fundamentals are lacking. I also do not receive hands on training at my firm, and I am looking to bridge my knowledge gap by taking some supplementary training programs, courses, or reading. I'm mainly looking to improve my knowledge of debits and credits. If anyone has any suggestions on anything that would help, I would be very grateful.

what specifically about debits and credits do you feel you are missing? They are pretty basic fundamentals of accounting so I would say if you're not comfortable with them in general, you need to look at some basics stuff. Try youtube or khan academy. Also, your local community college should have accounting 101 etc classes.

I understand how they work, but I've found that working, I struggle to know what account to debit and what account to credit when making journal entries. I plan on taking a 101 class in this next semester. I haven't heard of Khan Academy, so I will look into that. Thank you so much for your help!

I had the very same problem as you and no matter how many videos I watched or chapters I read it didn't make sense until I found this graphic. Now, for the most part, it clicks. This is a great tool for visual people like myself and it was found on the Ignite Spot blog. Of course there are exceptions such as contra accounts, but this graphic should help you nail down the basics.
