Trial Balance not balancing

Hi,

Hope someone can help me here. I am an ACCA student and am working as an Accounts Manager in a small company. This year I've been asked to try and prepare the books. I have gone through all the invoices, taken VAT from the sales to arrive at VAT output, done the same for purchases.I have prepared the control accounts for Sales, purchases, VAT. But the trial balance is failing to balance. Any chance anyone can give me some advice here.

Trial balance will not balance if GL does not balance - so check that first

If GL itself is out of balance then at some point, hopefully, the GL was in balance. So you have to find most current point GL was in balance then review GL postings from that point on to find where the GL went out of balance

If current GL is in balance then the error is in the preparation of the trial balance
