Hello - I want to know if working at a non-profit organization would negatively impact my future employment prospects/career?
I am a CPA, 12+ years professional experience in public accounting (Big Four) and private industry, with roles in audit, accounting operations, financial reporting (including SEC reporting), and financial analysis. I've had a solid work history (not a job jumper). I've been an assistant controller at a small-mid size company, and currently working at a Fortune 500 company as a financial reporting manager. I'm not real happy with my current situation (high-stress environment, long hours, long commute), so am considering other opportunities.
I don't have aspirations to be a CEO/CFO, but can see myself continuing up the corp. ladder in private industry in controller/director roles. But I also want to work where the work/life balance is reasonable. I've been an accounting professional for some time, so I realize we have our "busy" periods - i.e. close, etc.
My 2 questions I'd love answered are:
1. I found a controller level position at a non-profit that pays well with great benefits, has the work-life balance, and is a short commute. Would pursuing this (or any non-profit - i.e. Healthcare, Education, Government ) be a career killer?
2. Would you hire someone with Big 4, CPA, solid/broad skills in private industry, but who also worked in the non-profit industry?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
